College Essay Support
Feeling stressed about writing your college application essays?
Don’t know where to start?
Or maybe you’ve started, but hit a dead end?
I can help. I take the anxiety and confusion out of the college essay writing process and leave students feeling happy and confident about their admission essays.
I am a professional writer and editor who has worked for more than 25 years as a journalist, book author, publicity writer, magazine editor, and an associate director of communications and marketing for a non-profit. Over the past eight years, I have helped hundreds of high school seniors craft successful college essays.
“My goal is to take the anxiety and confusion out of the process and to leave students feeling happy and confident about their essays.”
- Alison Bell
Most students have very little experience writing personal essays in high school. Much of what I do is provide students with basic yet effective essay-writing techniques. I coach students to tell their stories through a “slice of life” focus rather than a broad story, and to breathe life and color into an essay through the use of details and descriptions. I also give students essay structures to choose from that simplify the writing process and eliminate writer’s block.
I approach college essays from a writer’s perspective. Students don’t need to brand themselves or try to change themselves into someone they “think” a school is looking for. When students write clear, direct prose from the heart, they will discover their own voices as writers and catch the attention of the college admissions staff.
I keep in contact with college admission officers from around the country and stay current with what is happening in the world of admissions. I’ve also been through the college admissions cycle three times with my own children. My oldest son graduated in 2015 from Columbia University in New York City, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. My daughter graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2016, and just finished a master's degree in English Literature in Kings College, Cambridge, England. My youngest son, a senior in high school, is currently awaiting college notifications to see where he will land up.
I have a proven track record helping students get into their top college choices, including Yale, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Columbia, MIT, Boston College, Tufts, Pomona, Northwestern, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and NYU, just to name a few. I look forward to helping you make your college dreams come true.
